Summary Gek1036

I have to start to say that I really have enjoyed this class and thank everyone for learning me so much about Singapore and your culture, both classmates and Prof Deng. Being a part of this class has actually worked out a few question marks about my experiences her.

In the beginning I really didn’t know what to expect, I had studied communication and culture separate before so in the beginning I thought I maybe were going to have a clue what the class was going to be about. Now after I realist that cross-cultural is related to communication and culture but in the same way a completely new topic. I didn’t thought it was so many ways except for the language that could make big confusing during communications.

The classes have been fun with all the different cases we been doing and presenting. I also
like that we are such a small class and you had the opportunity to get to know your classmates and then also practice cross-cultural communication.

The blog experience has been completely new and interesting for me ( I still don’t believe that Sweden use CMC more than Singapore). But I have been learning and now in the end really enjoying it. It is very interesting to read your classmates thoughts about the classes and see what they found extra interesting. In the beginning I found it quite scary that everyone were going to read my thoughts about the classes (maybe also because I’m not use to write in English too) but all the comments has been nice and motivated to continuo. And I have to say that a admire many peoples creativity with pictures and movie clips.

Finally as mentioned before ,in my blog, I found out that the more you are study culture and communication the bigger the topic becomes and you are ending up with more knowledge but even more confused than in the beginning, but confusion is fun. Wishes all the best luck on exams and in life!

Gender communication

I have actually never reflected or thought about that men and women communicate so different. Well, I realized before that woman likes to talk more about feeling and shopping when guys prefer to play cooler and talk about sports and technology
Yesterday I was analyzing my data from my questioner and without thinking of what I was doing I was butting male before female in the questioner. Before last class I wouldn’t haw reflected about it but now I got really annoyed at myself for doing that.

CMC

I find it quite surprising that Sweden is higher than Singapore in using of cmc. I actually thought Singapore would be on top because I have never meet people who use sums and email that much. Maybe its just me and my friend who is old school and calling and always forgetting to check the email. Before I went to Singapore I in fact didn’t even had Facebook.
I neither had no idea that so many people wouldn’t be able to live whit out there cell phones. I think I could live whit out my but I would struggle a little bit. I actually forget my phone at home quite often and the weird thing is that I feel relieved when I do it, but I also feel guilty that people can’t reach me. Sometimes I think its maybe my subconscious that make me forgot my phone so I can relax a little bit. So I consider it’s really scary that we are as addicted as we are to technology today. How would we manage if everything crashed down?

Spoken Discourse

I keep charring my cultural differentness between Singapore and Sweden. The class this week actually cleared up some of my experience here in Singapore.
When I moved to Singapore the first thing I had to do was find an apartment. Me and my now being flat mates called like 100 different agents about flats. And the thing we noticed as different (weird) was that everyone just answered the phone – Hello. If I would have done that in any one of my different jobs in Sweden my boss would fired me or at least shout at me for like 15 minutes. In Sweden you have to, at least in the jobs I had, say: The Company’s name, your name and sometimes even the buildings name or the name of the street. So, now I can tell my flat mates that the agents not were rued to us because we called from an oversea phone number, they were just answering their phones the Singaporean way.

Speech events

So, last week’s class was about speech events and I learned that if a guy from Japan ask me to marry him and I don’t want to I have to say no and not just be quiet, because in that case I will end up married. I really enjoyed this class and I realized that communication studies just get you more confuse than before, but in a good way. I mean, this weekend I was speaking in the phone with my dad and I was explaining for him what courses I`m taking and what they are about. When I was telling him that I`m taking a few classes in communication, he ask me why? What is it you can study about communication? it´s just talking? When he asks me that I realized that I would have requested the same question two years ago before I started study it. I think that, people think, communication could not be an issue before them starts to reflect what communication really is about. And the more you analysis communication, the more complicate and complex it gets. So I discovered that communication is so much more than just talking.

Speech act

I think that the class about speech act was really interesting. Before this class I didn’t think that you for example can respond to a compliment in so many different ways. Because in Sweden we uses compliments a lot and everyone is, most of the time, just accepting it. I think it the reason to that are that our parents are complimenting us a lot when we are kids and then everyone gets use to it and keep complementing etch other. I think give complements as much as people do in Sweden is both good and bad. It’s good because it helps you feel better about yourself and it helps you groove as a person. But it could also have negative effect like if you not getting complements for something that you were expecting a complement fore, it will in that case instead result that you feel bad and insecure about yourself. Something in between is always the best. Looking forward to see you all in class tomorrow.
